Universal Life Insurance in Roseville
Universal life is lifelong coverage with a premium that can rise or fall as your earnings change, and a cash value account that grows over the years. We help you set up a policy that fits your budget, then review it with you every year so it keeps doing its job.

How universal life works and why it needs care
Universal life is permanent coverage. Each premium is split: some pays for the insurance, and the remainder goes into a cash value account that earns interest. You can put in more during strong years and less during tight ones, and the death benefit can often be raised or lowered later within the insurer's limits.
People pick it for that flexibility, and the same flexibility is why it needs watching. Interest credits move, insurance costs climb as you age, and a policy paid at the bare minimum can quietly use up its cash value. Plenty of universal life policies that lapse were never cancelled by anyone. The money just ran out.
We approach your policy as a decades-long commitment. It starts with realistic assumptions, and then each year we meet with you to confirm it is still on track to last. If your need only covers a fixed number of years, we will say directly that term life could be the better fit.
What you get from us
- Your needs come first
- We begin with the people who rely on you, your debts and goals, and how many years the coverage should run. That figure shapes every other decision, so we calculate it together rather than guess.
- Every illustration walked through
- Each universal life quote includes an illustration. We cover the guaranteed column alongside the projected one, so you can see what happens when interest rates fall short.
- A premium you can sustain
- We recommend a premium that holds the policy up under conservative assumptions and also show you the minimum, so the floor is clear.
- Owner and beneficiary choices
- We discuss who gets the benefit first, who is next in line if that person cannot, and who should be listed as the policy owner. Ownership affects taxes and business arrangements such as a buy-sell agreement between partners.
- A review every year
- Annually we pull your latest statement, hold it up against the original plan and run a new projection. If the policy is slipping, we tell you early, while a modest premium change can still correct it.
- A look at older policies
- Own a universal life policy from years back and unsure where it stands? We can help you ask your insurer for an in-force illustration and explain what it says.
Signs universal life fits you, or your policy needs a checkup
You want coverage for life
Term policies end after 10, 20 or 30 years. If you want a benefit for your beneficiaries no matter when you pass, a permanent policy is the place to look.
Your income goes up and down
Business owners, commission earners and seasonal workers often prefer adjustable premiums to the fixed payment that whole life requires.
You have estate or business goals
Universal life is often used to leave an inheritance, cover estate costs or fund an agreement between business partners.
Your cash value keeps shrinking
If the account value on your annual statement drops year after year, the policy charges are outpacing your premiums and interest. That is worth looking at now, not in ten years.
You received a lapse or underfunding notice
Insurers send letters when a policy is at risk. Please do not set it aside. Bring it to us and we will go through your options together.
What goes into a universal life premium
Universal life has no one set price, since part of it is your choice. The insurer figures the cost of insurance from your age and health, and you choose how much above that minimum to pay in. We go through every piece so the figure is clear before you sign.
Your age and health rating
Applying younger and in better health lowers your cost of insurance. Tobacco use, blood pressure and family medical history all affect your rating.
Size of the death benefit
A bigger benefit means a higher monthly cost. We help you set it by what you actually need instead of a round figure.
Which kind of universal life
Guaranteed universal life is built for lasting coverage and carries little cash value. Current-assumption and indexed versions try to grow more cash value but rely on interest or index credits.
How much you pay in
Putting in more than the minimum in the early years creates a cushion that helps carry the policy later, when insurance costs go up.
Optional riders
Add-ons like a waiver of premium or a long-term care rider raise the cost, and we recommend only those that suit your circumstances.
How we set up and look after your policy
- 1
A conversation by phone
You call and tell us who relies on you, what you can comfortably put toward a premium each month and the job you want the policy to handle. There is no pressure to decide on that first call.
- 2
Quote and illustration review
We prepare a quote and go through the illustration with you, including how the policy holds up if interest credits stay low.
- 3
Application and underwriting
You complete the application with our help. Most insurers ask detailed health questions, and many require a short paramedical exam that can be scheduled at your workplace. Underwriting usually takes a few weeks.
- 4
Delivery and first review date
Once the policy is approved, we read through the contract with you, confirm your beneficiaries and set the date for your first annual review.
- 5
Yearly checkups
Every year we compare actual performance with the plan and recommend adjustments to premiums or coverage if they are needed.

Common questions about universal life
What sets universal life apart from whole life?
Whole life keeps one premium forever and grows cash value on a schedule the insurer guarantees. Universal life lets you change your payment, and sometimes the benefit amount, but its results lean more on interest credits and how well the policy is funded. That is why we go over it with you each year.
Is it possible for a universal life policy to lapse?
It is. Once the cash value reaches zero and your payments no longer cover the monthly charges, coverage can end. Funding the policy well and reviewing it every year is the surest way to prevent that.
Can I get at the cash value down the road?
Usually. Most universal life contracts allow a loan against the account or a direct withdrawal. Loans build interest, and any unpaid balance reduces what your beneficiaries are paid. We run the figures first so you know how taking money out shifts the policy's outlook.
How does indexed universal life work?
Interest is credited partly based on a stock market index. Gains are capped, and a floor usually keeps losses out. It may grow more cash value, but a projection is not a promise, so we also show you conservative scenarios.
Will I have to take a medical exam?
Frequently, especially when the benefit is large. Some smaller policies are issued on health questions only. We let you know what your application will probably need before you begin.

Keep your coverage working for the long run
Tell us what you want the policy to do, and we will show you how to fund it and keep checking on it with you year after year. Clients in Roseville, Rocklin and Granite Bay call us for new coverage and for second opinions on policies they already own.
